It opens a window to the past, a legacy trail that shares the unique stories of early cultural encounters in Paihia and the relationships fostered between the missionaries, their families and mana whenua.

Journey through time and place. Ātea Nuku Time Walk Paihia is a unique opportunity to learn about some of the people who lived in Paihia in centuries past. It explores the early history of Māori who have lived in this rohe for centuries, and how they worked with the Church Missionary Society (CMS) towards the vision of a shared nation. By exploring the relationships forged at Paihia we can begin to appreciate and understand the context of the Treaty of Waitangi more fully, and the coming together of two different cultures to form modern Aotearoa.

As Waitangi Marae chairman Ngati Kawa Taituha noted, the legacy trail honours the bond between Māori and missionaries, offering a commemorative experience that enhances the mana of all involved and serves as a powerful reminder of the shared vision behind the Treaty of Waitangi.
